Perimenopause Symptoms at 52
At or just past the median final period
By 52 slightly more than half of women have had their final period, which makes this the age where postmenopause becomes the majority experience. Symptoms do not respect that boundary: hot flashes persist for a median of 4.5 years beyond the final period, and genitourinary symptoms often begin or worsen now. The work at 52 is less about identifying the transition and more about not settling for untreated symptoms.
What periods typically look like at 52
If you have gone 12 months without a period, you are postmenopausal. If you are still cycling at 52, you remain in the normal range, and the diagnosis rules for over 45s still apply, symptoms and history, no blood tests needed.
The most common symptoms at 52
Persistent hot flashes and night sweats
a median of 4.5 years of vasomotor symptoms follow the final period
Vaginal dryness and painful sex
the most undertreated symptom cluster of this stage
Urinary urgency and UTIs
genitourinary syndrome of menopause progresses without treatment
Sleep problems
often outlasting other symptoms
Joint stiffness and muscle loss
muscle mass and bone density both decline faster postmenopause, making strength work genuinely protective
What is not typical, and needs a doctor
Postmenopausal bleeding always needs prompt review. Rapidly worsening pain, breathlessness or neurological symptoms are not menopause symptoms and should be assessed on their own terms.
Testing and diagnosis at 52
Past 45, NICE guidance is clear: if you have typical symptoms and cycle changes, a doctor can diagnose perimenopause from your history alone. No blood test is needed, and testing is actively discouraged in this age group because fluctuating levels make single results misleading. What helps most is a written record of your symptoms and cycle pattern.
Pregnancy is still possible during perimenopause, even at 52. UK guidance advises contraception until one year after your final period if you are over 50, or two years if your final period happens before 50.
Common questions at 52
How long do symptoms last after the final period?
Longer than most women are told. SWAN found total vasomotor symptom duration averages 7.4 years, including a median of 4.5 years after the final period. Vaginal and urinary symptoms tend to persist or progress without treatment, but respond very well to it.
What should I focus on health wise at 52?
Bone density and heart health join symptom relief as priorities, because estrogen loss accelerates both bone loss and cardiovascular risk change. Strength training, protein, calcium and vitamin D, plus a proper conversation about hormone therapy if you have symptoms, have strong evidence behind them.
